Well shock and horror because rumours were true and the iPad mini is a reality. Looks like a great device that may fit in large pockets – I would definitely consider one when I come to replace my iPad 2 but choosing the right size is difficult. I always have an iPhone and often carry an iPad with its 9.7 inch screen. 7.9 inches is great for reading a book but 9.7 inches is better for browsing and VNC. I’m not looking forward to making the decision when it comes to upgrade time. There is a real horror in all this and that is the price:
Wifi
16Gb £269
32Gb £349
64GB £429
WiFi + LTE Cellular
16GB £369
32GB £449
64GB £529
Ouch!
The rest of the presentation yesterday saw new Mac minis, iMacs and a MacBook Pro 13 inch with retina display revealed. I did have a concern that they described the new iMac as amazing and thin. I want my notebook to be thin but I want my desktop to be powerful. They then went on to say it had lost a whole load of weight. Again, it’s a desktop not a laptop – I will not be wandering around with it. Hmmmm. I hope Apple don’t go too far with this form over function thing. [NB The 21 inch iMac has no user replaceable RAM and the new MacBook pro only has solid state memory for its hard drive.]
Overall I have to sum up by saying Apple has just announced another brace of beautiful devices at expensive prices. But when my food bills seem to increase by 25% a year as ‘costs’ grow I can’t really be surprised when the price of my computers follow suit.
